Diary of Cucumbers in the Greenhouse
In the early morning, I opened the door of the greenhouse. A moist air filled with hydroponic cucumbers rushed towards me. The vines were covered with small yellow flowers with morning dew, and several bees were busy flying among the flowers.
I remember when I first transplanted the young plants, they were only about the size of a palm, with tender green leaves gently unfolding. Now these little guys have climbed up to over two meters along the trellis, resembling a green waterfall. The most astonishing thing is the position of the first melon: just below the fifth true leaf, a thumb-sized cucumber has formed. This is thanks to the selection of a strong female variety.
Last week, we noticed that several plants had white powdery spots on their lower leaves. We sprayed them with diluted milk water. This morning when we checked, the sick leaves had recovered and the newly grown cucumber stems were exceptionally straight. We picked a ripe cucumber and took a bite - the sweet juice instantly filled my mouth - this was the fresh and crisp taste that couldn't be found in supermarkets.
