Minimizing Strawberry Phytophthora Disease: Efficacy of Elevated Tray Cultivation
2025/12/10
Phytophthora cactorum is one of the primary pathogens causing strawberry diseases. The disease spreads primarily through sporangia and zoospores, which splash from the tray field surface onto the transplants in the trays. For this study, researchers conducted a three-year consecutive comparison between the traditional cultivation system and a novel elevated tray system—designed to minimize splash contamination from the tray field to the transplants.

In two out of the three study years, the new system (without any fungicides targeting P. cactorum) performed equivalently to or even outperformed the traditional system (utilizing authorized pesticides). Data on P. cactorum presence in air samples and splash water collected at various heights validated the hypothesis: reduced splash dispersal is the key driver behind the elevated tray system’s effectiveness. This highlights the potential of reconfiguring cultivation systems to reduce reliance on pesticides.
